Mamertine Prison

Anyone thought to pose a threat to the security of the ancient Roman state was thrown into the Mamertine Prison, a dank, oppressive underground dungeon, squashed between the Roman Forum and the present-day via dei Fori Imperiali. The prison’s most famous inmates, legend has it, were Saints Peter and Paul. Peter head-butted the wall in the ground-level room leaving his features impressed on the rock, and caused a miraculous well to bubble up.
