Chiesa Nuova/Santa Maria in Vallicella
Filippo Neri (1515-95) was a wealthy Florentine who abandoned commerce to live among the poor in Rome. He founded the Oratorian order in 1544. In 1575 work began on the order’s headquarters, the Chiesa Nuova. Neri wanted a large, simple building; the walls were covered with the exuberant frescoes and multicoloured marbles only after his death. Pietro da Cortona painted the Assumption of the Virgin (1650) in the apse, Rubens the Virgin and Child (1608) over the altar.
