San Gregorio Magno

This baroque church stands on the site of the home of one of the most remarkable popes, Gregory I (the Great; 590-604), who spent his 14-year pontificate vigorously reorganising the Church. In a chapel on the right is a marble chair dating from the first century BC, said to have been used by Gregory as his papal throne. Also here is the tomb of Tudor diplomat Sir Edward Carne, who visited Rome several times to persuade the pope to annul the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, so that the king could marry Anne Boleyn. Outside stand three small chapels (closed Aug), behind which are the remains of shops that lined this ancient road, the Clivus Scauri
