Circus of Maxentius

One of the best preserved Roman circuses, this was built by the Emperor Maxentius for his private use in the early years of the fourth century AD. Remains of the Imperial palace are perched above the track, at its northern end. Earthenware jugs (amphorae) in the upper sections of the long walls helped lighten the load above the vaults. At the north end is the mausoleum Maxentius built for his beloved son Romulus.
