The Buddhist island of Putuoshan, Suzhou with its amazing gardens and the villages of Zhouzhuang, Tongli and Wuzhen are all good day trips from the city.

Hangzhou, a city of temples and gardens centring on the West Lake, and Nanjing, former capital of Imperial and Nationalist China, are both a few hours further afield and worth two days apiece at least.
