Transport

Far and away the easiest way to get around Shanghai is by taxi. The metro is modern and cheap but with only two lines it does not go to the vast majority of places worth visiting, and the same goes for the light railway. Like most Chinese cities Shanghai has a very good bus network but it’s not easy to find your way around if you don’t read or even speak Chinese. The main station for all long distance treks is Shanghai station (Shanghai Station Metro +862163179090), North of People’s Square. As in all Chinese cities the station area has a reputation for crime amongst the locals, so keep your possessions close.
