Chianti, the hilly area between Florence and Siena, features gentle vine-clad slopes, olive groves and plenty of woodland. To the west of Siena is Colle di Val d’Elsa, an attractive and lively town that makes a convenient base for visiting the area, including Siena itself. To the south are little towns like San Quirico d’Orcia, a typical Tuscan hilltop village with a fine 12th-century collegiate church, and Montalcino, known for its red wine.
