The end of 2006 sees the appearance of Split’s first major chain hotel; the 382-room Meridien (www.lemeridien.com), in Podstrana, four miles outside town towards Omis. It will include a spa, gym and conference facilities. Central Split suffers from a distinct lack of good, mid-range accommodation. A notable new cheapie in the Palace is the Jupiter (Grabovceva sirina 1, 344 801, www.hotel-jupiter.info, from 250kn, closed winter), with basic rooms and showers in the corridors but with prices half those in the renovated nearby Prenociste Slavija (Buvinina 2, 347 053, from 600kn). The prosaic Slavija fills quickly in summer and rooms above reception get the full brunt of bar noise until 2am.
There is a handful of three-star rooms above the Adriana restaurant (Riva 8, 340 000, www.hotel-adriana.hr, 750kn-1,000kn) or there’s the faded elegance of the once-smart, three-star Bellevue (Bana Josipa Jelacica 2, 347 499, www.hotel-bellevue-split.hr, 679kn-750kn). At the higher end of the scale, Split now boasts its first boutique hotel, the Hotel Art (ulica Sloboda 41, 302 302, www.arthotel.hr, 1,200kn), with huge beds and spa facilities being added in the summer of 2006, while a 15-minute walk from the palace at Bacvice, the four-star Park (Hatzov perivoj 3, 406 400, www.hotelpark-split.hr, 990kn- 1120kn) offers high-standard comfort.
To find a private room for around 250kn, contact the tourist office at Riva 12 (347 100, turist-biro-split@st.htnet.hr).
