From Opicina, the cliff-top Napoleonica footpath runs high over the Adriatic towards Prosecco, giving access to the limestone plateau – Il Carso – and its ponds, lakes and caves. The largest is the impressive Grotta Gigante (www.grottagigante.it, closed Mon except in July & Aug), a vast cave open for (compulsory) 50-minute tours.
