Two major events take place in the summer: the week-long cultural festival of Central European music, film, dance, literature and visual arts better known as Mittelfest (end July, www.regione.fvg.it/mittelfest); and the prestigious sailing race La Sfida (www.lasfida.it) in the Gulf of Trieste, from 3 September.
