Danielson: A Family Movie

Unlike so many rockers, Daniel Smith, mastermind of the band Danielson, worships neither Mammon nor Bacchus: He’s an avowed Christian, which adds extra weirdness to his already whacked-out brand of indie music. Director J.L. Aronson tracks the careers of Smith and his siblings-slash-bandmates over a decade, but just as he’s about to get bogged down in jejune hipster commentaries, another theme unexpectedly emerges: the metamorphosis of Sufjan Stevens from Danielson hanger-on to indie-pop star. Though Stevens ends up with the bigger audience, Aronson seems to suggest he can never hope to be as freakily creative as his mentor. (Opens Fri 15; Cinema Village.) — Elisabeth Vincentelli
