Equal parts thriller, ethnic family drama and queer romance, Ethan Mao follows the plight of 18-year-old Ethan (Lee), who is thrown out of his family home after his domineering suburban Chinese patriarch (Ma) discovers his son is gay. While eking out a living as a hustler, Ethan moves in with fellow rent boy Remigio (Hernandez). On Thanksgiving, the duo breaks into Ethan's former home and takes his parents hostage. Over the next 24 hours, Ethan confronts his kin about their failings, providing a forced conflict for a film that's ultimately not very captivating.
