Love and Honor: movie review

Two soldiers—straitlaced Dalton (Austin Stowell) and prankish Mickey (Liam Hemsworth)—get a week’s leave from the war in Vietnam. Instead of exploring Asia’s brothels, they head to a hippie-filled Michigan, where they pose as deserters and Dalton attempts to discover why his girlfriend, Jane (Aimee Teegarden)—now calling herself Juniper—has given him the heave-ho. The modestly-budgeted-to-a-fault production values wouldn’t matter as much if director Danny Mooney & Co. didn’t cut corners elsewhere, dropping the soldiers into one stock ’60s situation after another. (Bring on the sitar flourishes!) It’s a lightweight drama filled with heavyweight war-is-hell monologues, delivered by a cast that lacks the gravity to sell them.
