“You’ll believe a man can fly,” ads for 1978’s still-majestic Superman promised. Oy, to have such problems: These days, I’d settle for a director who could crack wise once in a while. Zack Snyder’s dull-as-dirt Man of Steel (the second reboot in seven years and still not getting it done) feels like a straitjacketed affair, scared of ever wandering into humor, self-deprecation or romantic byplay. Produced by king of pain Christopher Nolan, it forgets to give the new Kal-El (muscle-bound Henry Cavill) a single recognizable emotion, save The Dark Knight’s all-purpose brood—which isn’t going to cut it when our S-clad hero, more than any other, has to inspire a gushing citywide love (so well-captured in the Koch-era original). The film’s coyness is frustrating: Did they really need to cut Clark Kent’s mild-mannered reporter from most of the scenario? That’s the concept, guys. Deal with it.
Here’s what the somber fan base seems to want these days: an elaborate, Krypton-set intro, complete with Avatar-like flying creatures and Russell Crowe running around with various keys and skulls (don’t ask); plenty of rain-dappled Kansas pageantry made for misty-eyed dads; and an all-too-talky Zod (Michael Shannon, nowhere near as enraged as he was in his viral sorority video). The better actors—Kevin Costner, chiefly, as the adoptive Earth father—strain to supply warmth, but mostly, the minutes stretch into great expanses of blahness, much of them filled with Transformers-grade skyscraper snapping and bloodless catastrophe. Open your mouth, you want to say to Cavill; inspire us a little. Unfortunately, the movie’s title is apt.

How much did Marvel pay you?? It's so obvious that you were bought lol... It oozes out that you're ONLY in to bash it and magnify only its' negative points...
Great Superman origin story. Love the new take it makes Superman exciting again. It's not a dark tone movie a lot of people have been saying it's as dark as the Nolan batman trilogy - No clue what so ever. There is more action, a compelling story and an emotional story and it is very good. I personally believe it's as good if not better than Super hero movies of the last 2-3 years. It's certainly on a level playing field with batman begins. Four and half our of five. I'm just so happy Superman is back and my word it's back with a bang. four & half out of five. P.S DON'T LISTEN TO CRITICS. They are vampires who suck the soul out the best of movie's. Just because they say low scores, Don't make it a bad one, Some newspaper critics, media critics, slate batman begins and The original Superman, it's all down to personal opinion. My opinion is if you like The original Superman. You'll love this new take. :)
"Man of Steel (the second reboot in seven years and still not getting it done)". Do you know the definition of a reboot? Man of Steel is the "first" reboot of the Superman film franchise. Superman Returns is a sequel to Superman II and ignoring the events of Superman III & IV.
The reviewer doesn't even take time to analyze the film. It seems that the majority of reviewers with negative comments were expecting another Chris Reeve's homage or a romantic comedy. This movie was great, had action, tension and character development. If you were expecting 1978, too bad. Characters need to reflect their time not the critics nostalgia. Oh and before Tommy F down there sends me to my parents basement, or call me a nut job I am a genetics professor who can still enjoy Superman and evolution :) I am sure many users here are as accomplished as he is. There is no need to be a jerk to people.
Lol....You sound bitter that you are stuck in the 80's. Watch the movie again, this time without the meds
I really don't know what movie you did watch. "Man of Steel" is the best superhero movie done up to day!
