Somm: movie review

There’s a fine line between ambition and obsession, as the four friends featured in Jason Wise’s cork-dork doc can attest. The quartet are studying for the herculean Master Sommelier exam, a test that all but guarantees topflight jobs to those who pass it; their preparation involves memorizing nuanced winemaking theory and identifying a quaff’s varietal, vintage and region in a timed blind tasting. Though wrenching moments are effectively delivered, the film teeters into clunker territory, with repetitive tasting scenes and cheesy shots of exploding glasses of vino. Too bad, because it’s an otherwise fascinating look into an ultraexclusive process, persuasively depicting the power of the palate.
