As far as couples on the run go, the not-so-dynamic duo in writer-director Amy Seimetz’s feature debut is as cryptic as they come: We know that Crystal (Kate Lyn Sheil) and Leo (Kentucker Audley) are definitely on the lam, and that their furtiveness involves something residing in their car trunk. Facts are doled out selectively—the film’s gambit being that the longer it withholds pertinent info, the more likely it is to conjure atmospheric dread. There’s a fine line between slow-burn deliberation and simply being slack, of course, and Seimetz hasn’t quite figured out how to sustain long-form tension; by the time this modest microindie noir starts laying its cards on the table, your attention will have already folded.
