“I don’t have to think,” says desperate housewife Eileen Cleary (Kathleen Turner). “I’m a Catholic.” When her monsignor (a spry Richard Chamberlain) nominates her for Catholic Mother of the Year, Cleary tries to wrangle her family for the perfect photo op, but her recovering-alcoholic husband (Michael McGrady), imminently divorcing son (Jason Ritter) and pregnant lesbian daughter (Emily Deschanel) don’t exactly fit the church’s definition of perfection. Although her character comes across as more clueless than zealous, Turner seems stifled by the joyless role of a woman whose only purpose is to be taught the error of her sanctimonious ways.

  • This movie was apparently written by some clueless, anti-Catholic twit. This is one of those films so bad that it is actually worth watching -- a cult film. It should be view by an acting class when they reach the "avoiding screenplays that can hurt your career" section of the syllabus. Sure, send up the Church. I have no problem with that, but at least show some knowledge of the Church, a sense of humor, and an informed understanding of real Catholics and the problems they face. To award this thing two stars is grade inflation.
