Given that Vancouver doesn't have a great deal of history to call its own, you'll find only token gestures towards pre-history (ie before 1880) in this modest museum primarily aimed at families and schoolchildren; to explore the culture and heritage of the First Nations peoples you'll need to head to the Museum of Anthropology. The largely 20th-century collection of bric-a-brac is complimented by personal recollections, photographs and films. Children are encouraged to get the feel of period toys and clothes, while adults can listen to vintage radio shows. One corner shows how close the city came to running a freeway through Strathcona and across its northern waterfront, a plan scuppered by resident protests - worth remembering as you stroll along Coal Harbour today.
