Follow the signs for the Scala del Bòvolo from campo Manin and you will emerge in a narrow courtyard entirely dominated by this elegant Renaissance spiral staircase, built sometime around 1499 by Giovanni Candi. Spiral staircases are called scale a chiocciola (snail staircases) in Italian; bòvolo is Venetian dialect for snail. It was beautifully restored in 1986 but has been closed again for further restoration - a shame, as the view from the top is charming.
