Scuola Grande di San Marco (Ospedale Civile)

This is one of the six scuole grandi, the confraternities of Venice. It's now occupied by the city hospital, which extends all the way back to the lagoon. The façade by Pietro Lombardo and Giovanni Buora (1487-90) was completed by Mauro Codussi (1495). It features magnificent trompe l'œil panels by Tullio and Antonio Lombardo representing two episodes from the life of St Mark and his faithful lion. Over the doorway is a lunette of St Mark with the Brethren of the School attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.

Very interesting museum of medical instruments which will appeal to medical practitioners and students. There are also many old texts on display including books by Versalius and even Galen (a 17th century reproduction). There is a fascinating (and rather moving) preserved body of a tiny, congenitally deformed adult man, unfortunately with no accompanying information, but he might conceivably have been a jester or circus exhibit. Contrary to the website, there is a charge to enter the museum for non-Venetians. The room in which it is housed is a fine medieval salon with paintings by Tintoretto.
