Thomas Mann wrote, and Luchino Visconti filmed, Death in Venice in this glorious art deco hotel set in its own park with private beach and tennis courts. If you wish to experience the Des Bains in its current state, hurry: in autumn 2011 the place will shut down for a massive revamp, to eventually reopen as luxury serviced residences run by the Four Seasons group.
