GQ once declared that mixologist Derek Brown makes the best martini in America. Judge for yourself at the Passenger, the former Gibson bartender’s venture in the gentrifying Mount Vernon Square area. The bar is named after the Iggy Pop song; inside you’ll find an informal drinking den with bespoke cocktails (there’s no list, but tell the bartender what drinks you like and he’ll cater one to your preferences) and gourmet bar snacks. Behind an unmarked door at the back of the bar lies the Columbia Room, a 12-seat, reservations-only speakeasy with some of the most inventive cocktails in the city. For a flat rate (around $50), Brown will mix you three craft cocktails with some nibbles on the side, and lecture you at length on the art of drinking.
