Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, the documentary by Jennie Livingston chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Following the workings of the elaborate balls, as 'houses' are formed and individuals perform, the film explores issues of identity, gender, sexuality, creativity, racism, class, poverty and community. The film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey.
