Understanding and managing project outrage when social tensions and community conflicts emerge.

Currently an unprecedented scale of transport, urban renewal, energy and water infrastructure projects are being planned or delivered in the next decade across Australia. Central to all major projects and infrastructure development, and critical to project delivery is community engagement and consultation. The intention is to foster and build resilient communities in an environment of often permanent change to place and amenity.

How can you achieve this when there is so much social tension and conflict on many of these major projects? Despite the best efforts made to engage, consult and inform communities about projects, risk-led communication is often required to offset the community outrage that can emerge.

At this briefing guest presenters Birgit Porter and Molly Campbell from GHD Advisory will provide high level insights into the causes of social tension and provide some clues on how to go forward with confidence. Examples will be discussed, and there will be many opportunities for informal discussion around and the highs and lows of outrage management.

This session will allow networking time from 7.30am prior to the presentation commencing at 8.00am.

Birgit Porter, Service Line Leader Stakeholder Engagement and Social Sustainability, GHD

Birgit is the Service Line Leader for Stakeholder Engagement and Social Sustainability across Australia, Asia Pacific, UK and Middle East. She is an experience stakeholder engagement consultant with extensive experience working across planning, environment and infrastructure projects. Birgit’s strategic advice, in-depth knowledge of engagement practice and extensive experience adds value to all projects. She is a highly experienced facilitator and practitioner, specialising in engagement process, design and implementation to ensure that ‘all the voices’ participate.

Molly Campbell
Stakeholder Engagement, Communication and Research,GHD

Molly is a communications and digital advisor with GHD’s Stakeholder Engagement, Communication and Research team. Molly is passionate about public participation through strategic communication and the use of digital technology. She has worked with numerous local and state government clients in Canada and Australia, delivering engagement and communications strategies for complex major infrastructure and government projects. Molly started her career as a journalist working in Kigali, Rwanda.
