The Houseboat Museum is not just a museum about houseboats: it's actually on one. In fact, it more or less is one: aside from some discreet explanatory panels, a small slide show and a ticket clerk, the Hendrika Maria is laid out as a houseboat would be, to help visitors imagine what it's like to live on the water. It's more spacious than you might expect and does a good job of selling the lifestyle afforded by its unique comforts. Until, that is, you notice the pungent scent of urine emanating from the public 'curlie' (as they are locally called), a toilet right by the boat.
