Georgia Tech College of Architecture Reinsch-Pierce Family Auditorium 247 Fourth St NW, Atlanta GA 30332 map + directions: http://www.arch.gatech.edu/school/visit Karen Kubey, Executive Director at the Institute for Public Architecture, presents research and design proposals responding to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's "total reset" for public and below-market housing. Kubey will also discuss the IPA exhibition at the Center for Architecture, Low Rise High Density, examining a selection of the most ambitious housing schemes of the last 50 years, which attempt to combine the benefits of urban and suburban living. Through its programs the IPA asks: how can architecture better serve the public? Kubey is a New York-based architectural designer and educator specializing in housing design and research. Trained as an architect at the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University, Kubey began her career in affordable housing design. She co-founded both the Architecture for Humanity New York chapter and New Housing New York, the city's first design competition for sustainable and affordable housing. She is a recipient of the Independent Projects Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, is a 2014-15 New York Foundation for the Arts Emerging Leader, and was the 2012 Wilder Green Fellow at The MacDowell Colony. A contributor to numerous publications, Kubey has curated exhibitions at New York's Center for Architecture and the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Her projects have appeared in The New York Times and her work has been exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York. Founded in 2009 by architect Jonathan Kirschenfeld, the Institute for Public Architecture promotes socially engaged architecture through urban research projects and a residency program for design practitioners. By supporting architects and allied professionals working in the public interest, the IPA strives to improve our public realm. The IPA's current program series responds to New York Mayor de Blasio's "total reset" for housing. The organization launched "Total Reset" with a multidisciplinary roundtable hosted by Columbia University; its subsequent residency and exhibition in Harlem, on the same theme, featured four research and design proposals for public and below-market housing in New York. "Total Reset" is featured in ART PAPERS' January/February 2015 issue, "The Stubbornness of Space," a special edition devoted to architecture and design, guest edited by Robert Wiesenberger, and guest designed by Julian Bittiner. This ART PAPERS LIVE is co-presented with the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. ART PAPERS LIVE HOST COMMITTEE + SPONSORS: Johnathan Short One Consulting Group, Inc.
