Megan and Satchel are expecting a baby boy at the end of March. Their baby, Levi, was diagnosed with CDH at his 20 week anatomy scan.
Info on CDH:
CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia ) is a rare birth defect of the diaphragm. Essentially with CDH there is a hole in the diaphragm that allows organs from the belly to move into the chest and thereby compromising critical lung development and displacing the heart. The cause of CDH is unknown.
Every patient diagnosed with CDH is different. There are many surgical procedures and complications that may or may not occur with each baby. After Levi is born he will be stabilized and transported to Egleston's Children Hospital where he will have his first surgery to repair his hernia and put his misplaced organs back where they should be.
Roughly 50% of babies born with CDH do not survive. Of the 50% that do survive, most will endure long hospital stays, feeding issues, asthma and other problems. A few of the survivors suffer from severe long-term medical issues.
