With the invention of the first motion-picture cameras, film-makers have had an interest in making films that are rooted in social justice causes. As viewers, we become participants in this ongoing conversation. We witness the struggles that individuals of color face in the film industry; and, we have become increasingly more aware that films about social justice have been platforms for people of color to shine in front of as well as behind the camera. Does the film industry have a responsibility to intentionally support the opening of doors for people of color? Should there be an expectation of film-goers to call for more films that give people of color, and others who may be marginalized, a more prominent voice and platform?
