WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
A young Patrick J. Sloyan was a wire-service reporter during the Kennedy administration at a press bureau that "doted on" the President. Now, over 50 years later, he turns a much more critical eye to the legacy of John F. Kennedy. In his new book, THE POLITICS OF DECEPTION: JFK'S SECRET DECISIONS ON VIETNAM, CIVIL RIGHTS, AND CUBA, Sloyan pulls back the veil on Kennedy's shaky last year in the presidency, exposing a man whose role during the calamities and deceptions of the early 60s--the assassination of South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem, the negotiating of a secret deal to resolve the Cuban missile crisis, and the wiretapping of Martin Luther King, Jr.--was much more involved than we have been led to believe.

“This riveting book is a compelling read….With dogged persistence, scrupulous archival work and firsthand interviews, [Sloyan] has turned on its ear the sanitized history of the last year of John F. Kennedy’s presidency….[a] solid, reliable narrative.”
—The Washington Times

“Pat Sloyan for five decades has exhibited fierce integrity, honesty, diligence, and factual news judgment like few in his profession. A stickler for journalistic ethics, he has rejected official source journalism whenever truth was the alternative.”
—Ralph Nader
