Karl Jenkins, The Armed Man — A Mass For Peace
M. Roger Holland, II, The Sounds Of My People

Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man (1999) is a concert setting of the Mass incorporating reflective texts from Kipling, Tennyson and Sankichi Toge – a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. Jenkins uses the 15th c. French “L’homme armé” melody as an anti-war motif in the tradition of Britten and Vaughan Williams. The work was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict. Holland’s setting of the Mass features the 2010 Roman Missal translation paired with African-American gospel music as conceived for use in Catholic parishes.
