Directed by Takashi Miike
Japan/UK, 2010, DCP, 141 min., Color

Takashi Miike is a unique figure among Japanese filmmakers. Beginning as an assistant director to the master Shôhei Imamura, he became a fixture in the straight-to-video action film market in the ‘90s. He makes movies on every level of the respectability scale, from loopy manga adaptations to bad-taste comedies to the occasional great work of cinema (AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER). 13 ASSASSINS is a new version of an old story, also filmed in 1963 by Eiichi Kudô. It’s about usurpation of state power and the way that order is restored through the bravery and sacrifice of the titular assassins. Full of truly amazing performances and jaw-dropping action sequences. We don’t expect to see one of the best samurai films of all time in the middle of the CGI era, but here it is.
