From KWAIDAN and HARAKIRI director Masaki Kobayashi comes a samurai film vastly different from the more well known works in the vein by Akira Kurosawa. Not an action film per se, though the action presented here is vivid and unforgettable, but rather a precise and intense tragedy about the spiritual and moral conflicts engendered by the Japanese sense of honor in general and the samurai’s code in particular. The peerless Toshiro Mifune stars as the samurai head of a family who must defy his lord in a matter of family honor. Kobayashi’s visual style is painterly and his pacing is unusual, especially for a film about a fighting clan. Different, beautiful and fascinating.
