"What we need to question is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us. Question your teaspoons. What is under your wallpaper? How many movements does it take to dial a phone number?"

-G. Perec

PUTTANESCA BAYOU presents the most recent iterations of Liverman's ongoing exploration of black, white, and red. This nearly monochromatic palette works to emphasize the foibles of every mark, and strikes a sweet spot between figure and abstraction.

This primal simplicity can be associated with the Constructivists, the Third Reich, the Chicago Bulls, and the Catholic Church. As his series has progressed one can see the interplay between the rigid, authoritarian palette and the wabi-sabi looseness of each mark; a balance of the fanatical, the fascist, and the acceptance of life's imperfection.

Liverman explores art’s role in the world, and its potential therapeutic abilities. These paintings attempt to match life's anxiety, and to provide a playful relaxation from the physical fatigue associated with being. Much like Matisse, who hoped his work might enact “something like a good armchair."
