Silences of the Palace (Samt al-Qusuur)
Moufida Tlatli, Tunisia, 1994, 120 minutes
Arabic with English subtitles

Moufida Tlatli’s 1994 Tunisian classic Silences of the Palace follows the story of Alia, a wedding singer, who has returned to the palace of her birth after an absence of many years. She spent her childhood there alongside her mother Khedija, who was one of the family’s servants. Alia has come to pay her respects as the family mourns the death of one of the men in the family; however, returning to the palace forces her to encounter a flood of memories from the time she spent there. Told through a series of flashbacks, Silences of the Palace is an unflinching critique of class, patriarchy, and politics in Tunisia.
