Former Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert M. Gates will serve as the third annual Tom Johnson lecturer. The lecture will be held in the LBJ Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.

Book signing: Prior to the event, The Store at LBJ will host Dr. Gates for a book signing of “A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service.” Book sales will begin at 4:45 p.m. in the upper LBJ Auditorium lobby, and he will sign from 5-5:45 p.m. Book sale proceeds benefit the LBJ Presidential Library.

HOW TO GET TICKETS
Seating is limited. Tickets are required for entry.

1) PUBLIC: As of Jan. 20, we no longer have any tickets available for the general public.

2) UT STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FACULTY: Free tickets are available with a UT student, staff, or faculty ID at the Student Activities Center (SAC) ticket office located on the main floor beginning Tuesday, Jan. 19. Limit one ticket per ID.

Stand-by Line: On the day of the program, a stand-by line will form in the upper lobby outside the LBJ Auditorium. Just before the program begins at 6 p.m., those in the stand-by line will be invited into the auditorium to fill any empty seats. Admission is not guaranteed and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Location and Parking: Free parking will be available in the LBJ Library visitors’ lot (lot #38) and, after 4:00 p.m., in lots #37 and #39. Overflow parking will be in Manor Garage on a self-pay, space available basis.

The LBJ Auditorium is located on the lower level of the LBJ complex at 2313 Red River St. You may access the auditorium through the lobby of the LBJ School of Public Affairs or through the south auditorium doors by the LBJ Fountain.

Robert M. Gates served as Secretary of Defense under both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He was also an officer in the United States Air Force and worked for the CIA before being appointed director of the agency. A member of the National Security Council staff in four administrations, he served eight presidents of both political parties. He was president of Texas A&M University from 2002 to 2006, is currently chancellor of the College of William & Mary, was named president of the Boy Scouts of America in 2013, and has served on several corporate boards of directors.

About: The Tom Johnson Lectureship was established in 2010 in recognition of and appreciation for Mr. Johnson's 30 years of distinguished service as chairman of The Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Johnson served as executive assistant to President Johnson and, later, as president and then chairman of CNN. The lectures made possible by the Tom Johnson Lectureship are open to the student body of The University of Texas at Austin and the general public free of charge.
