We might be biased, but Brighton is a day-trip destination like no other. It has the perfect mix of an old-school, nostalgia pier (yep, there’s an arcade), and vibrant, winding shopping streets, full of seriously trendy veggie and vegan cafés and long-standing markets for thrifting, so there’s plenty to explore, whether the sun is out or not.  Oh, and there’s the beach. And don’t mind the pebbles – the seafront is lined with ice-cream shops, bustling beach bars, and now the long-awaited Sea Lanes (opened in June 2023), you can spend whole days here sipping tinnies and tucking into fish and chips. Just beware of the seagulls. From feminist bookshops to indie galleries, cultural attractions to stunning walks, here are the best things to do in Brighton right now.  RECOMMENDED:🍝The best restaurants in Brighton☕The best coffee shops in Brighton🐟The best places for fish and chips in Brighton🍺The best pubs in Brighton This guide was recently updated by Liv Kelly, a writer from Brighton. What is it and what is it famous for? Let’s get one thing straight – the area often referred to as ‘the lanes’ actually comprises two different patches. The North Laine, which was historically a run-down area, is now a vibrant, ridiculously colourful smattering of independent business, and is considered one of the city’s creative, artistic districts. The Lanes – often referred to as the ‘south’ Lanes – are the much narrower, more labyrinth-like alleys which instead boast homeware shops and high-end brands, as well as loads of jewellers. It’s these little streets which formed part of the OG ‘Brighthelmstone’ settlement. Just think of North Street as the dividing boundary between the two.  Is it worth visiting? There’s a reason why these higgledy-piggledy alleys and avenues are one of the city’s biggest draws, for locals and tourists alike. The shabby, colourful North Laine is the place to head for cracking coffee, pastries and incredible second-hand shopping, whereas the more tranquil, historical Lanes (to the south) are home to lovely restaurants, bars and artsy little boutiques.  Where’s good to eat nearby? Both patches have got brilliant places to eat. During the day, Mange Tout in the North Laine is a brilliant spot for a plate, a coffee (or a glass of wine), and some people watching. But if you’re headed out in the evening, we’d recommend gorging on some locally-sourced seafood at Riddle & Finns before having drinks at The Golden Pineapple in the Lanes.  📍 Discover more

Fish and chips is a British classic, and what better place could there possibly be to enjoy it than by the glorious seaside? Chippies, pubs and beach front cafes across Brighton have fish and chips on their menus, with trendy chefs adding a touch of modern flair to this national dish, but also plenty of options if you want a no-fuss-no-frills kinda supper.  Having grown up in Brighton, I've sampled my fair share of the city's chippies. And with so many to choose from, you gotta get it right. To save you from floppy batter and sloppy chips, or from paying an extortionate tourist premium, these are my top picks for the best fish and chips in the city. You can follow that delicious waft of vinegar knowing you're in safe hands — just watch out for the seagulls.  RECOMMENDED:🍔 The best restaurants in Brighton🏙️ The best things to do in Brighton☕ The best coffee shops in Brighton🌜 The best Airbnbs in Brighton This article was written by Liv Kelly, a writer from Brighton. Brightonians are caffeine fanatics, pure and simple. The wired residents of this seaside town spend more per head on coffee than anywhere else in the UK, and it's thought that the city has a crazy high number of coffee shops per person.   It's all for good reason, though. The coffee scene here is the best in the country, with a thriving band of independent businesses serving up delicious cups using beans bought from all over the globe and roasted locally. Whether you’re grabbing an oat flat white to go or want to linger over a dirty chai latte, the coffee capital of the UK has an abundance of options.
