Impress a date or take a group of your nearest and dearest to Teneriffe's home of wine, cheese, cured meats and all the good things in life

The weekly rotation of cured meats at Claret House runs deeper than bresaola, sopressa and free-range Sarda Salumi, and comes buffered by house-made pickles, pastes, and the most moreish cracker straws imaginable. Add your choice of cheese – chef picks are chalked on the window (perhaps Ashgrove cheddar, a French Roquefort and a nutty little Forteto Boschetto from Tuscany?) and you've got one hell of a charcuterie plate to go with your choice of plonk.

They take food and wine pairing seriously here, with staff observing your charcuterie selection carefully before returning with a number of drops to complement. They’ll pour a few samples and give a brief bio if you’re interested. Heck, they’ll even go taste your cheese to be sure, should you be undecided. All parties happy, they’ll leave you with glass or bottle – your choice.

Claret House is tucked away in Teneriffe’s heritage Woolstores: a compact vault embraced by exposed brick and bottle-lined shelves. The barrel-clad bar offers a few stools, but look skywards and you’ll see where the rest of the seating went: a cluster of antique bentwood chair hangs from the ceiling in an artsy (if not precariously haphazard) manner. We say head outdoors, where rustic seating spills out onto the decked terrace, strategically aligned with river glimpses.

The focus is on Antipodean and European wines divided by style, price and vintage. Claret House maintains that each wine is individually researched and tasted before it hits their wine list, which means a constantly changing repertoire of drops – supported by a select run of Champagne, sparkling and a few bottled craft beers.

Service is tailored, and as discreet or interactive as you choose, meaning it works equally well for date night as it does for casual drinks or group hangouts.
