Originally shot as a miniseries for Swedish television, Scenes from a Marriage is said to have been so popular that its broadcasts rendered the streets of Stockholm empty and sent the national divorce rate soaring. Never before had the inner workings of a relationship been expressed with such complexity and eloquence.

Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson's portrayal of the couple at the centre of this depiction of the slow collapse of a marriage is spellbinding. They inhabit their characters and bring a startling level of honesty to their performances. In writing the screenplay, Bergman drew from the dissolution of his own relationships – including the one he'd had with Liv Ullmann in the years prior to the series.

Scenes from a Marriage will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
