Victoria Justice | Interview

Not even a slight cold can keep Nickelodeon’s Victorious star from looking glamorous as she chatted with us about her upcoming movie Fun Size. Hitting theaters October 26, Fun Size is about Wren, played by Nick star Victoria Justice: your typical high schooler, who is forced to watch her brother on the night of her crush’s Halloween party while her mom celebrates the night with her much younger new BF. At the start of her already-ruined night, Wren loses her younger brother amidst a crowd of trick-or-treaters. Also starring in Fun Size is Chelsea Lately’s Chelsea Handler as Wren’s mom Joy, and Jane Levy, Thomas Mann, and Osric Chau as her partners in chaos for the movie. Victoria sat down with us to talk about her movie, being in Chicago, and her feelings about expanding her music.

What made you interested in Fun Size?
I was looking for a project. I was filming my show Victorious and I've always loved film, and I wanted to be a part of a great film and expand myself outside of Nickelodeon. I was sent the Fun Size script and when I first ran through it, I thought it was really funny and something different.

What about the script got you hooked?
I loved the fact that it all took place on Halloween night, and my character gets into all these crazy situations and things get completely out of control.

How has Fun Size helped you branch out of your normal TV roles?
It's a great start. It's my first leading role in a big studio film. It's a huge deal for me. I would love to continue to do film and I love making them. I want to play a variety of different characters in different genres of film.

How was working with Chelsea Handler?
Honesty, we don’t have that many scenes together, but the scenes we did have together were a lot of fun. For her character, Joy, you don’t want to feel bad for her, because she’s being this awful parent, but Chelsea finds a way to bring sympathy to her character.

Wren ends up having a lot of problems with her mom. Is there a lesson to be learned from their relationship?
Chelsea’s character finds her own path of self-discovery where she realizes, I probably shouldn’t be acting this way. I’m a mom for two kids and this isn’t really right. Wren has a lot of resentment towards her mom. I'd say that if you had a strained relationship with your mom, for whatever reason, the best thing to do is be open with each other, talk it over, try and work it out somehow as opposed to just putting a wall up and pushing them away.

What was the hardest part about filming Fun Size?
Ninety percent of this movie takes place on Halloween night so we were constantly doing night shoots for two months. It would be four o'clock in the morning and we would still be in the same scene, and I was falling asleep on the sets, and they would say, 'Okay, Victoria, wake up! We're calling action in 5 seconds!'

I’m sure all the teenage boys want to know, but which character would steal your heart away in real life?
For me it's all about personality, and I think Roosevelt has the sweetest personality. He’s so cute and adorable and he really sacrifices a lot for Wren. He's real supportive, and I think I would want to be with someone who was supportive and kind.

After filming this you must be ready for Halloween to start. What’s your favorite costume you’ve ever worn?
Last year, I was Sally Bold from Cabaret. I had a bowler hat, and I put on a short black wig and big fake eyelashes with a red feather boa and fishnets.

So what’s your favorite Halloween candy to get?
I like lots of candy. When I was younger I was really into sour stuff. I like chocolate too.

What can we expect from you music-wise?
I've been writing songs for my album since I was 16, and I just like writing songs that I like. I've grown up since I've been on the show, and I've matured over the years, and my songwriting has grown a lot. I want to release my own record that's outside of Victorious. I think that would be another way to branch out.
