It's official: After a long winter shutdown, Navy Pier will begin a phased reopening plan on April 30, bringing back a host of its most iconic outdoor attractions. And to celebrate the Pier's opening weekend, representatives announced plans for a weekly fireworks show that will light up the skies every Saturday this May.
The first 10-minute fireworks show, which will honor city healthcare workers, is set for May 1 at 9pm; subsequent shows will run Saturdays at 9pm through the month of May. You'll be able to watch the glittering display from any of the Pier's open areas, which include Polk Bros Park and restaurants like Offshore Rooftop and Bar as well as Pier Park (and, of course, its famous Centennial Ferris wheel). Social distancing guidelines and face mask requirements will remain in place.
Officials are expected to announce other details about the Pier's reopening plans in the coming weeks. One thing that won't be returning is the Navy Pier IMAX Theater, which announced its permanent closure last month.
“Following Navy Pier’s longest closure in recent history, we are anxious to reopen our spaces and safely welcome guests back to the Pier,” Navy Pier President and CEO Marilynn Gardner said in a statement.
You can visit Navy Pier from 10am to 8pm Sunday through Thursday and 10am to 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Here's a full list of areas that will be open starting April 30:
