Pizza Rustica

What’s the “Rustica” referencing? You could say it used to apply to the original location, tiny and fairly bare-bones, but now that success has propelled chef-owner Stefano Roman into a larger, glossed-up space with brick walls, wood floors and a nice bar, we’d have to say the “Rustica” only applies to the food. Pizza topped with rosemary and potato or piled with artichokes sports a buttery crust that’s crisp on the bottom but otherwise soft and fluffy, while fluffy housemade gnocchi soaks up every bit of rich rabbit ragù, all of it rustic in the best way.

DO NOT GO HERE. This was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. A group of us went here for the Aquanaut event for Chicago Craft Beer Week. One friend of mine had been here before and had only rave reviews for the food and the service, but we were all sorely disappointed. Our server was slow, inattentive and rude. I didn’t order food, but two of my friends said their entrees were very mediocre. One of them ordered the chicken alfredo and left all of the chicken on the plate because it was that bad. Finally, the owner/manager (?), a dark-haired middle-aged woman, was the most rude, hostile, aggressive person I have ever encountered in the hospitality industry (and I’ve worked in the business).


Part of the event was collecting letters per tasting/drink ordered, and when we had our last tasting glasses we asked our server for our letters. He said he thought they were out and we told him we were only one letter away from one of the winning words, which he then said was the only prize he thought they had left. He said he would check and be right back. After 20 minutes, we hadn’t seen him at all. We decided we would just go check with the woman who seemed to be in charge of the promotion, which is when our trouble really started. I explained what happened and she was very cold and unapologetic, saying that there were only so many prizes. I explained to her that we understood that but were upset because if our server had come back we may have had the winning word in time. She kept insisting that it wasn’t her problem, and after I explained that we had been dissatisfied with our server the whole time, she said she would talk to him first. After that, she never came to talk to us. When I got back to our table after talking to her, the server had dropped off the bill for our group. He had been very rude about not splitting our bill (“well, I would have if you had asked”), and we also found an extra beer on the bill that we had not had. He kept repeating that we were only charged for items he brought to our table, then changed his story to say that “the billing was confusing.” He then agreed (very rudely) to get the extra beer taken off. Lady manager came over a few minutes after that, telling us that she would NOT be taking our extra beer off. We think she thought we were trying to get something comped for the earlier issue with the giveaway, and when I went inside to find her and explain that it was just an extra menu item, she was incredibly rude and aggressive. She threatened to call the cops on us, tried to get a chef to deal with us instead, and would not bring the server over after I asked her to, telling her that he would explain what he had told us at the table. The chef got him to come over and again, after he said he would take the beer off, she told him he would not and that we would pay, because charging for extra items “isn’t how we do business here.” Because human error isn’t possible, even though the server was ready to fix the mistake? After she walked away, he gave us cash from his tips to cover the beer, but as we were finally checking out the chef came over to our table and started harassing us. He asked one of my friends where she worked, asked if she had ever been a manager (she had, in fact, worked in restaurants for six years), and told her that he should come to her job and harass her like “we had done to him.” This was in front of at least ten other customers. The entire staff here was completely rude, unprofessional and unwelcoming, and I don’t understand how this restaurant has stayed in business if this is how they regularly treat customers.

Even though I live in the burbs I try o get to Pizza Rustica  at least once a month if not more  The food is outstanding and packed with flavor.  We never order the pizza, but go for the specials on the boards with a suggested wine.  This chef can cook!  And the charm of the place makes it well worth the trip.

If you are in the area this, is a must stop location. Be sure to check out the menu items on the blackboard, they change daily and never disappoint. My personal favorite is the pizzas. The crust is always perfectly crispy yet the toppings are cooked to perfection. This has become my go to pizza place in the city. Once you sit down be sure to ask your server questions. They are all well versed in the menu items as well as the wine list.Pizza Rustica is a must for date night, girls night or a pick up on the way home from work night.

Love this place...You can't go wrong with anything you order from the menu.I suggest ordering from the blackboard items of  the day.  The atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing. And the staff is just wonderful, friendly and very helpful. Always just a great experience.

The first time I came here, it was for a friend's birthday dinner. Then I moved into the area, and came here again with a promo for CheekyChicago where Juliana would pick a glass of wine for me on the house. Now? I'm a regular, and I bring people here all the time. Chef Stefano's food is phenomenal (hint: just do the blackboard menu) and Juliana's hospitality and hugs keep bringing me back.


You can't go wrong with anything you order here, but I would recommend anything with garlic in it ;)

Almost any restaurant can have an exceptional menu or captivating atmosphere- and rarely does an establishment uphold both of these qualities well. Thankfully, for those who are seeking a sexy, yet relaxing environment accompanied by an impeccable meal (in a fantastic neighborhood), Pizza Rustica fulfills all dining experience fantasies. 

From the ever-changing Blackboard menu, to their modern Italian favorites, Pizza Rustica is the neighborhood staple for every date-night, wine-night, warm-belly comfort food cravings. Relaxing with a glass of wine on the patio during the summer months or enjoying the cozy dim (yet appropriately) -lit dining room with a perfectly seasoned pizza and/or entree doesn't get much better than this. 

Never disappointing, always comforting and sometimes availably el-fresco, Pizza Rustica is a *must* for every food lover.

AMAZING restaurant. Food is always delicious (Chef Stefano makes the best food ever) and everyone who works there is friendly and warm. It's my go-to spot for anniversaries/birthdays/etc because they never disappoint!

I went here for the first time last year for my birthday and was completely blown away.  From the communal dining tables to the "mom and pop" style of food, you truly feel like family here.  I've never salad, pasta, or pizza that I haven't liked.  Pizza Rustica has quickly become a favorite of mine and a place I like to take friends and family.  Great date spot too!  Oh and their cocktails!  Delish!

I don't even look at the menu anymore...blackboard is where it's at. Maybe because I'm a regular, and have been for years, but Chef Stefano never disappoints. Epic beer and wine selection. I don't even live in the area anymore, but I'm still there almost every week.
