Beach Palooza: A 5K with an obstacle challenge | July 30
Tue Jul 26 2011
What’s better than a day at the beach basking in the sun? Not much, I’ll admit. Unless of course you’re a runner. Go double duty at the beach this Saturday, July 30, when the sand stomping challenge Beach Palooza rolls into town.
Maybe you missed last Saturday’s Great Urban Race. You can redeem yourself this weekend at its sister event, Beach Palooza. Or maybe urban adventure racing’s just not your thing. You won’t see much of an urban atmosphere racing around Montrose Beach and competing in obstacle challenges. A noodle forest? Mat walls? Plunging into chilly water? Leaping over what race organizers are calling lily pads? I can only imagine what that entails.
One thing for certain is that it’ll guarantee one of my slowest 5K times ever. That’s right: Racers at Beach Palooza run a 5K on the sand and the roads surrounding the beach, but they’ll encounter nine obstacles on their way to the finish line. Whoever thinks that sounds easy might be nuts—I’m fearing each one of those obstacles, especially since I don’t know what to expect at three of them. But isn’t that part of the challenge?
Here’s what you need to know about this new event in the Red Frog Events series (the Warrior Dash and Great Urban Race being the other two). Beach Palooza kicks off at 11 am on July 30 at Montrose Beach. Beach Palooza closes advance registration on Thursday, July 28, at 5pm (you can still register race morning though). Beach Palooza costs $55 in advance, $65 race day. Beach Palooza doesn’t have to be done alone—friends are encouraged to participate in groups and can start in the same wave. Not sold yet?
