Jeff Awards 2014: Equity Wing nominations

Goodman Theatre and Drury Lane clean up with more than 20 nods each

The Joseph Jefferson Awards committee has announced the nominations for its 2014 Equity Wing honors. Or, rather, Jane Lynch—the popular TV actor, who won an Emmy Saturday night in her role as host of NBC's Hollywood Game Night and got her start in Chicago's theater and comedy scenes in the early ’90s—announced the nominations on-camera for a tape-delayed YouTube video. Why? Hey, why not!

Getting to the nominations themselves, the Goodman Theatre and Drury Lane Productions led the field by a wide margin, racking up more than 20 nods each. Goodman hit the high score, with nine nominations for Rachel Rockwell's revival of Brigadoon, six for Rebecca Gilman's new play Luna Gale and smaller numbers for The White Snake, Pullman Porter Blues and Smokefall.

Brigadoon aside, Drury Lane dominated the musical categories, with nine noms for Les Misérables (Rockwell again, that over-achiever), five for Young Frankenstein, four for the first Chicago-generated production of Next to Normal, and a few more for a revival of Hello, Dolly! (Rockwell's one misfire this season) and that new old chestnut, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Other companies with strong showings include TimeLine Theatre Company, with big numbers for its outstanding revivals of A Raisin in the Sun and The Normal Heart; Mercury Theater Chicago's stagings of The Color Purple and Avenue Q; Porchlight Music Theatre's Ain't Misbehavin' and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; and Writers Theatre's intimate production of The Dance of Death, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company's Holocaust drama Our Class, and Seanachaí Theatre Company's mounting of Conor McPherson's The Seafarer.

The complete list of 179 nominations in 35 categories follows. The 46th annual Equity Jeff Awards will be presented October 13 at Drury Lane Theater in west suburban Oakbrook Terrace.
