Jimmy Smits will play recovery sponsor Ralph D. in Anna D. Shapiro's Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of The Motherfucker with the Hat, the theater announced today.

Smits, perhaps best known for his TV roles on NYPD Blue, L.A. Law and The West Wing, has an extensive list of stage credits, including the Broadway production of Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer winner Anna in the Tropics and numerous productions with the Public Theater. He'll make his Chicago stage debut in Stephen Adly Guirgis's play, in the role originated by Chris Rock in Shapiro's Broadway production last year.

Smits completes the casting for Motherfucker, joining the previously announced John Ortiz, Sandra Delgado, Sandra Marquez and Gary Perez. Shapiro's new production runs December 28–March 3; individual tickets go on sale October 19. The first production of Steppenwolf's new season, David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People, opens this weekend.
