CTA does away with inward-folding doors on El trains

Blue Line commuters, rejoice: Those inward-folding "blinker doors" will no longer be among your public transit annoyances. On Thursday, the Chicago Transit Authority will take the outdated 2200-series car off rails. After fielding complaints about the double-barrel accordion doors for years, the CTA will replace the older-model cars, originally purchased between 1969 and '70, with the new 5000-series, which has aisle-facing seats and whisper-quiet sliding doors (the stuff of rom-coms).

The CTA honors the 2200-series' 40 years of service tomorrow in a ceremonial last run, the agency said in a press release yesterday. Hop aboard at the Rosemont Blue Line station at 10:05am tomorrow as a train of eight cars displaying '70s-era exterior decals and vintage interior advertising makes one final round-trip.
