On Saturday, rapper and Hell on Wheels actor Common traded his TV show's Western wardrobe for a nifty tuxedo, to host the second annual Common Ground Foundation gala and fund-raiser. CGF, a charitable agency founded by the South Side native, provides educational programs, including a summer camp for local youth ages 13‐15.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel was on hand, praising not only Common’s philanthropic efforts, but also this year’s honorees. Among the model citizens commended for their humanitarian efforts were singer Harry Belafonte, Chicago Bear Israel Idonije, Boeing Corporation executive vice president James A. Bell and MillionDollar$cholar financial resource founder Derrius Quarles. Prior to gathering inside the Ritz-Carlton ballroom for dinner prepared by executive chef Mark Payne, the sold-out crowd bid on a bevy of silent auction items. More than $150,000 was raised.
