I know I shouldn't play favorites, but I have to say the 100 Best Things We Ate and Drank is my favorite issue of the year. This year's list is especially fascinating: 

  • Trends: This was the year of chicken: Ten (!) chicken dishes were deemed the best, and I'm not even counting the chopped chicken liver at Au Cheval. Also, biscuits: Four versions of the Southern staple made the list.

  • Of those ten chicken dishes, one, the chicken and waffles at Longman & Eagle, was chosen by our readers as the 101st best dish of 2012.

  • Not only did we photograph all 101 dishes (which you can check out in our lovely slide show), we also asked local art photographers to shoot their interpretations of eight dishes and drinks on the list. The result is shocking, bizarre, beautiful and perplexing—sometimes all in the same photograph.
