Fans of contemporary Scandinavian homewares are spoilt for choice when shopping in Copenhagen, with both artisan-led boutiques and large design stores in abundance.

Stilleben is one of the most stylish of the former category, selling handcrafted ceramics, artisan jewellery, covetable textiles and graphics-based prints from its two-storey shop just off the main shopping stretch of Strøget. Another contender for Copenhagen’s best design shop is Vesterbro’s Designer Zoo, which sells furniture, glassware, jewellery and ceramics by artisans from across the country – not least those based in the six in-house studios. The larger store Normann Copenhagen, meanwhile, is a first port of call for locals when furnishing their (usually unfathomably stylish) apartments.

Copenhagen’s fashion shops are also above par for such a small capital, with local designers dominating the show. The central area sometimes referred to as the Grønnegade Quarter makes for especially rich pickings, with the streets Grønnegade, Pilestræde and Kronprinsensgade home to covetable Danish fashion labels such as Norse Store (casual menswear), Wood Wood (men’s and women’s streetwear) and Bruuns Bazaar (fashionable mens- and womenswear). Nearby is Copenhagen department store par excellence, Illum.

Kronprinsensgade is also home to Copenhagen’s most venerated tea emporium; AC Perchs Thehandel dates from 1834 and its glorious, wood-panelled interior is lined with old-fashioned jars of tea leaves and colourful tea caddies. Chocolatier Summerbird is right next door, and specialises in flødeboller – addictive Danish marshmallow-based treats. Other good Copenhagen food and drink shops include Løgismose, Copenhagen’s best gourmet supermarket, located in the salubrious district of Frederiksstaden, and Ølbutikken, selling local craft beers from a small shop on Vesterbro’s best shopping street, Istedgade – also home to some excellent fashion and design boutiques. And for everything gourmet under one roof, don’t miss upscale food market Torvehallerne.
