Where to eat in Tokyo

Ryugin restaurant, Tokyo, Japan

Michelin-starred chef Seiji Yamamoto’s Ryugin

It’s no secret that Tokyo restaurants have been amassing Michelin stars at a startling rate in recent years, with whole clusters of them situated in Chuo-ku, Minato-ku and across the city. Chefs like Seiji Yamamoto – who runs Ryugin – have helped to elevate Modern Japanese cooking to a global stage, while the three Michelin-starred Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten serves some of the best sushi in the world.

Ramen restaurants offer delicious delicacies at affordable prices. The lunchtime queues outside Kagari in Ginza are a testament to their cooked chicken soba, while seafood lovers should try the strictly fish menu at Shinasoba Tanaka [no website]in Toshima. Just around the corner, Shinagwa offers a mean pork-based Basso Drill-Man.

Tokyo street food is even more readily available and absolutely mouth-watering. Tsukiji Market, open from about 4am until 10am, is the world’s biggest fish market and home to a number of amazing outlets including Tsukugon and Suga Shoten. You will find quality sushi and salted skewered shrimp on almost every corner.

When it comes to dessert Gion Tokuya in Harajuku has wondrous toasted jellies, the Toraya Café in Roppongi is home to a trademark azuki and cocoa fondant, while Hakusuido in Jimbocho has a 80-year legacy for some of the creamiest – and cutest – treats in town (try their famous poodle cakes).
