Cyprus overview

Join the sailing set at Limassol Marina

Despite the effects of the economic downturn, there are as many brilliant things to do in Cyprus as ever – you only have to look at their lively beach bars and clubs for evidence that the fun times never end on this beautiful island.

There are many great things to do, from savouring the superb seafood and mouth-watering souvlaki to taking in the marinas, breweries and fascinating historical sites. And as the island begins to step out of the shadow of the 2012/2013 financial crisis, new developments are springing up all the time.

The Cypriot government is handing out licenses for even more golf courses, both to Cypriot and foreign investors, with the aim of making the island a significant player on the international sports circuit.

Almost all the island’s marinas are having a facelift – the attractive new Limassol Marina in particular is receiving in excess of €350 million to help firmly place Cyprus on the nautical map.

Additionally, numerous new craft industries are being set up (thanks to grants from the European Union) and one notable example is the Prime Microbrewery, which is home to some excellent Cypriot ale.

The beaches have also been given a revamp with the three new sun-traps at Ayia Thekla, Sirenes and Poseidonas – expect golden sand, exotic umbrellas, drinks, snacks and disabled access.

Take the family down to Fig Tree Bay

Whether you’re looking for relaxing family resorts, bustling bars or thrilling watersports, Cyprus has a beach for everyone.

If you want to lie back in a state of serenity, the turquoise waters of Pezounospilioi (The Beach of Friendship) is an ideal spot. You can also drive to Latchi for deep-water dives, snorkelling and magical sunsets. For a more cosmopolitan air, Nissi Beach is the place to be. Choosing Guaba Beach, especially on Sundays, is best for those who want to dance till they drop.

For families, Fig Tree Bay offers tranquility, good food, watersports (courtesy of Fig Tree Bay Watersports) and more. Party animals, meanwhile, should head to Larnaca’s extensive Mackenzie Beach for a choice of all-day bars.
